The contract requires ABB to design, engineer, supply and install the AC cable system to link Butendiek offshore wind farm to Tennet’s SylWin alpha high voltage direct current (HVDC) converter platform.
The cable system, which is due to be installed and commissioned in 2015, will be capable of transmitting 144MW of wind energy, enough for about 150,000 households in Germany.

Located about 30km off the island of Sylt, the Butendiek wind farm will feature 80 Siemens 3.6MW turbines, which will generate enough energy for about 370,000 households.
The project’s site covers an area of 42km² in the German Exclusive Economic Zone Water of North Sea, close to the Danish-German border.
Dutch construction and engineering firm Ballast Nedam will carry out subsea inspection and maintenance at the wind farm.
Fabricom GDF Suez JV of Belgium will deliver the offshore substation platform for the project while the inter-array cabling will be provided by Visser Smit Marine Contractor, a company based in the Netherlands.
