Under the terms of the 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA), Exelon will supply power generated from the Michigan Wind 3 project, planned to be built in Sanilac County, Michigan, to Wolverine.

Exelon plans to commence construction of the project in spring 2016 while the facility is expected to enter service by December 2016.

Wolverine president and CEO Eric Baker said: "Wolverine is excited about the addition of Michigan Wind 3 to its portfolio.

"This project positions Wolverine favorably with significant renewable generation."

With the Michigan Wind 3 wind farm, Wolverine is expected to have 350MW of wind generation in its portfolio.

Wolverine said that the addition of new power generation means that Michigan cooperatives will achieve a 30% renewable level.

Exelon Generation Development vice-president Corey Hessen said: "Wind energy is an important element of Exelon’s strategy to offer more low-carbon electricity in the marketplace.

"The Michigan Wind 3 project allows us to expand our wind generation presence in Michigan, increasing our fleet capacity in the state to more than 550MW.

"Furthermore, Michigan Wind 3 is an investment in the future of the Sanilac County communities and will provide a boost to local economies through jobs, taxes and community spending."

Wolverine earlier signed PPAs for approximately 50MW of energy from the Harvest Wind farm located between Elkton and Pigeon, Michigan, as well as 150MW of power from the new Deerfield wind energy project planned to be built in Huron County, Michigan.

In Michigan, Exelon operates five wind projects including Beebe, Harvest I, Harvest II, Michigan Wind 1 and Michigan Wind 2. The projects have a combined power generation capacity of 352.6MW.
