Initially, the companies will bid for the Dutch Government’s tender for the development of Borssele I and II offshore wind farms, each with a capacity of 350MW.

Following the tender process, which is planned to start on 1 December 2015 and close on 31 March 2016, the Dutch Government expects to select the bidder in July 2016.

The wind farms are part of the government’s plan to call for tender for the development of five offshore wind projects, which are planned in three designated zones including Borssele, South-Holland Coast and North-Holland Coast.

The Borssele wind farm zone is located near the southern border of the Dutch exclusive economic zone (EEZ), approximately 0.5km from the Belgian EEZ.

The projects are expected to increase the country’s current offshore wind capacity by 3,500MW.

RWE Innogy CEO Hans Bünting said: "The formation of this consortium is an important step on the way to participate in the upcoming tender process in the Netherlands.

"Macquarie Capital’s outstanding financial skills and strength and EDP Renewables offshore wind experience complement perfectly our knowledge and experience in the development, construction and operation of offshore wind farms as Europe’s third largest offshore wind farm operator."

Macquarie Capital will serve as financial adviser to the consortium.

Recently, RWE Innogy and its partners acquired a 25% stake in £1.5bn Galloper offshore wind farm in the UK.
