The system intends to test battery storage in real conditions for frequency regulation in France. The Concept Grid platform is designed to stabilize the grid and avoids black-outs.

Situated on EDF’s research site at Les Renardières, south of Paris (Seine-et-Marne region), Concept Grid is a real distribution network that is designed to support, test and predict the electrical systems development towards smarter grids.

The 1MW per 30 minutes BESS features Alstom’s MaxSine eStorage smart converter and Saft’s Intensium Max 20 lithium-ion battery.

Energy production can be optimized as per the grid requirements with the help of Alstom’s MaxSine eStorage real-time energy storage management software.

Alstom has implemented specific EDF algorithms inside its software in order to develop and test the frequency regulation with a storage system.

Producers and grid operators will have an option to release or store energy into the grid in case of an imbalance between electricity production and consumption.

Alstom and Saft have earlier collaborated on the Nice Grid smart solar city demonstration project in Nice, France in late 2013.

The companies commissioned a 1 MW BESS for peak demand management by integrating intermittent solar energy.
