Visund is an oil and gas field in blocks 34/8 and 34/7 and is located 22km north-east of the Gullfaks field in the Tampen area.
With gas and gas condensate as primary exploration target in the Middle Triassic (the Lomvi formation), the 34/8-16 S well was also intended to assess additional resources in Lower to Middle Jurassic reservoir rocks (the Statfjord and Brent Group) and UpperTriassic reservoir rocks (the Lunde formation).
The company used the Songa Trym drilling facility to drill the well to a vertical and measured depth of 3875 and 3830m below sea level, respectively.
Drilled on the east flank of the Visund field in the northern part of the North Sea, and about 140km northwest of Bergen, the well intersected an oil/gas/condensate column of about 85m in the Lunde formation.
According to preliminary estimates, the size of the discovery would range between 0.4 and 1.1 million m³ of recoverable oil equivalents.
The company carried out comprehensive data collection and sampling on the well, which was not formation tested.
Further development of the discovery is planned alongside other potential additional resources.
Statoil now plans to permanently plug and abandon the well.
