Microsemi’s PowerDsine PD-9501G may be utilized with a broad range of advanced PoE Powered Devices (PDs) incorporating 802.11n Access Points, WiMAX CPE and base stations, Pan-Tilt-Zoom cameras and thin clients that need high power and support of 2-event classification as specified in the new IEEE 802.3at specifications.

With Microsemi’s PowerDsine PD-9501G, we continue to deliver on the promise of the emerging 802.3at standard, enabling our customers to get the best possible functionality out of Power over Ethernet, stated Sani Ronen, senior product line manager for Microsemi PowerDsine Midspans. This new Midspan offers a combination of high power, gigabit support and 2-event classification. It is a pioneering solution in a PoE market where, until today, the barrier to PoE adoption was its restriction to 15.4W and 30W, respectively, in 802.3af and 802.3at applications. ThePD-9501G will enable a host of new Ethernet applications to take full advantage of the well-known PoE benefits at 60W power levels.

The PD-9501G is capable of delivering power over all four pairs of Ethernet cable, which significantly enhances performance and efficiency as compared to two-pair products. Four-pair powering allows the PD-9501G to maintain a low, 600mA current level while providing 60W of power. This contrasts with the alternative 2-pair midspans that must feed 60W with current levels of 1.2A. As a result, the more efficient PD-9501G makes 51W available for the PD consumption using a CAT5 cable, as compared to 42W for 2-pair solutions.

Additionally to its 60W operating mode, the PD-9501G may also be utilized to power 2-pair devices with up to 30W. In this case, the midspan still utilizes all four pairs of CAT5-and-above cable, which allows it to dissipate up to 50% less power on the cable. A PoE system utilizing the PD-9501G will use almost 15% less energy than a conventional 2-pair solution, which translates into savings of about $25 per year per powered device, assuming energy costs of $0.10 per kilowatt hour (KWH).

The PD-9501G midspan unit also incorporates a new interlocking feature that enables users to scale their deployments by incrementally linking together the multiple one-port midspan units as new PDs are added to the network. The new midspan also allows the company’s customers to develop powered network devices with the advanced functionality allowed by the IEEE 802.3at specification.

The new PoE midspans provide the IT manager a simple, economic means to install PoE appliances like VoIP phones, WLAN access points and IP cameras, without replacing the IT infrastructure. The PD-9501G complements company’s portfolio of midspan products, incorporating managed and unmanaged products in a broad range of densities from single- to 48-port configurations.
