DEQ approved this action because of pilot testing conducted in the contaminated area between mid-2004 and early 2008.
The PECO facility manufactures specialty items for the aerospace industry through injection molding of plastics, casting of aluminum and component assembly.
In 2002, PECO began an investigation of contaminated groundwater and soil at the site under a voluntary cleanup agreement with DEQ. The probable source of the contamination is historic releases from degreasers.
DEQ approved this cleanup action while the company continues to investigate the extent of the contamination and feasible cleanup options at the site.
Additionally, PECO just completed pilot testing to assess the viability of treatment near the western part of the property. From October 2008 to October 2009, PECO injected a food-grade carbohydrate additive to stimulate biological reduction of contamination. Pilot testing showed a 95% reduction of contaminant concentrations in the test area. PECO and DEQ will further evaluate results in an upcoming feasibility study.
