Currently, land is being identified for the setting up of the park.
A government official familiar with the matter was quoted by Business Standard as saying: "For setting up such a park, about 5,000 acres are required. Since it is an uphill task to get a contiguous patch of 5,000 acres in Odisha, the park might be developed in clusters."
The park has secured the approval of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and may require an investment of Rs 6.5bn ($100m).
Around 20% of the power produced by the park would be bought by the state government. Producers will have the option to sell the remaining power at bilateral prices to entities outside Odisha. However, for that they will have to secure first right of refusal from the state government.
For the development of the park, Green Energy Development Corporation of Odisha Ltd (Gedcol) may ink an agreement with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), after receiving the state government’s approval.
Odisha energy secretary Suresh Mohapatra said: "We have not decided (on the solar park) yet. Idco (Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Develo-pment Corporation) has been asked to identify land. A decision will be taken after that."
Earlier this month, Odisha has become the first Indian state to get a 100% solar powered village.
Baripatha is a tribal village located about 25 km southwest of Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha.
The Baripatha project is a low-cost, low-maintenance and community-owned model.
