This second consultation on efficient products and appliances will allow stakeholders to influence policies that aim to decrease the energy consumption of products and improve the take up of the best performing appliances.
Measures to remove the worst performing products from the market and to promote the best performing products are already projected to offer a reduction of 7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere per year and deliver a GBP1 billion annual net benefit to the UK economy through reduced fuel bills.
The consultation will look at energy efficiency issues across domestic and commercial lighting, consumer electronics, white goods, motors and circulators, heating, air conditioning and IT equipment with a view to ensuring minimum efficiency requirements, encouraging the supply chain to make and sell the most efficient products and for consumers to purchase better performing appliances.
Manufacturers, retailers, consumer and environmental groups are invited to respond to this consultation giving their views on how to achieve a level of ambition that is achievable, yet challenging. A revised analysis will be conducted in light of input and will be published in 2010.
