Planned to be operational in fiscal 2017, the FRS has been designed to bring Unit 3 to a stable condition following explosion of hydrogen that destroyed the upper part of the reactor building.
The FRS can place the fuels in a transfer vessel (TV) and seal it securely and then it will lift the TV to an above-ground floor of the reactor building before moving them to a temporary storage site.
Comprising fuel handling machine (FHM) for removing the debris and fuel, the FRS features cranes for bringing in TVs, closing their lids and hoisting them up to ground-level floor.
The FHM features two manipulators which enable cutting and grabbing of debris and mast and fuel grapple tool for taking out fuel.
Toshiba said that the manipulator tips, auxiliary hoists and fuel grapple tool attached to mast can be replaced with a cutting or gripping jig through remote control based on the state of the debris in the pool.
Additionally, the crane section comprises the auxiliary hoist for removing and securing the TV primary lid as well as main hoist with the TV lifting rig. The rig is intended to transfers fuel to the TVs.
Toshiba said it will continue to develop technologies to help decommission the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station.
In 2015, the firm developed a new robot to evaluate the primary containment vessel (PCV) of Unit 2 of the Fukushima Daiichi power station.
