The Greater Sandhill power plant uses SunPower Tracker systems, which generate up to 25% more energy than conventional systems while reducing land-use requirements.
The solar facility has started generating power on 22 December 2010 and will serve the annual electricity needs of nearly 5,000 homes.
SunPower Trackers tilt toward the sun as it moves across the sky, increasing energy capture and providing more power on hot summer days when utilities need it most, the company said.
MetLife and John Hancock Financial Services provided financing for the third-party ownership of the facility.
SunPower said it is also constructing a 30MW San Luis Valley Solar Ranch PV solar power plant on 216 acres of private, former agricultural land in Alamosa County and is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2011.
Iberdrola Renewables contracted with SunPower to develop, own and operate the 30MW plant and to provide the technology and construct the project.
