SunPower will design, build and operate 5MW solar power project at Kalaeloa in West Oahu.
The purchase power agreement is subject to receiving the required approvals from the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission.
Upon receiving the required approvals, SunPower plans to begin construction this year and complete the solar PV facility within five months.
SunPower Business Unit president Jim Pape said that the solar farm will contribute clean, renewable power to Oahu while generating welcome revenues for the important work of the Hawaiian Homelands department on behalf of native Hawaiians.
SunPower said it will install high-efficiency solar panels on a SunPower Tracker system, that positions solar panels to follow the sun’s movement during the day, increasing sunlight capture by up to 25% over conventional fixed-tilt systems, while significantly reducing land requirements.
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, the solar project will produce enough renewable power to avoid almost 11,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
