Satcon Technology, A123 Systems and Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) will be joint recipients of the said award.
Satcon has been developing a PV integrated electric energy storage system capable of voltage and frequency support, PV firming, real power dispatch and ramp rate control to achieve the said objective.
Commenting on the project Satcon chief technology officer Leo Casey said, "As we seek to integrate renewable energy sources into the grid, improved controls and energy storage systems to reduce power output fluctuations become critical."
The system comprising of a 500kW PV array, Satcon’s 500kW PowerGate Plus inverter solution and a 500kWh lithium ion battery energy storage system from A123 along with high voltage version of Satcon’s battery power conditioning system will be put through further development and tests at SMUD’s corporate headquarters in Sacramento, California.
The grant is part of the CEC’s Public Interest Energy Research Renewable Program.
