As per the terms of the contract, the company will develop an energy storage system for use in grid connected systems, off-grid applications, and micro-grid environments in conjunction with the Army Renewable Energy Generation Systems (REGS).

C&D will use the technologies developed under the program, at its Blue Bell and Leola, Pennsylvania facilities, to meet the needs of its commercial customers with potential application to grid-energy storage, community energy storage, and renewable energy applications, in addition to application in other branches of the military.

The company will develop energy storage batteries that feature carbon nano-phase technologies and provide cycling properties that are required for wind and solar application and are fully recyclable at the end of product life.

The company will receive $1.2m immediately for the development of the project, followed by the balance of the contract funding over the remaining two years of the program.

The contract with C&D is a part of US Army’s initiative to increase the use of renewable energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuel resources and to achieve ‘net zero energy’ (NZE) for their base grid and micro-grid systems, for which a modular electrical energy storage system to both store and dispense energy is needed.
