The new AD5755 data converter is a multichannel control IC (integrated circuit) that features four 16-bit DACs with programmable voltage or 4–20mA output drivers, along with power control.

The power control feature senses the load impedance and provides the required power to the load, thereby minimizing power loss in the rest of the system, which in turn reduces self-heating and temperature elevation.

The new converter is claimed to reduce power consumption by 80% and net thermal rise (silicon temperature minus ambient temperature) by 75% compared to other control driver technologies. It is also believed to support four times more terminals than any other integrated converter, thus enhancing the performance two times in a single analog I/O module.

Its single chip architecture combines multiple converters, power management, linear and other functions and comes with standard industrial voltage and current output ranges.

The device in a 9 mm × 9 mm LFCSP (lead-frame chip scale package) operates in an industrial temperature range of –40 degree centigrade to +105degree centigrade.

Mike Britchfield, vice president of industrial and instrumentation group at ADI, said: “Increased terminal density puts pressure on module size and can result in extra heat generation in industrial systems.

“By reducing power consumption and self-heating, the dynamic power control function of the AD5755 meets customer requirements for increased channel density.”
