The funding is part of the commission’s alternative and renewable fuel and vehicle technology program that envisages a $90m investment for the development and usage of newer technologies, alternative and renewable fuels.

Commenting on the funding California Energy Commissioner Carla Peterman remarked, "These investments in clean vehicles will reduce petroleum use, improve air quality, and create jobs, while demonstrating California’s commitment to a greener transportation future."

The investments of public money through program is expected to be matched by investments from awardees, and by making payments on a reimbursement basis.

Tesla Motors will be the biggest beneficiary of the funding, having secured $10m to produce a new all-electric Tesla model X and will match the funding with a $50.2m investment of its own.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District & Quallion will receive a cumulative $5m for battery electric taxis and advanced battery management systems respectively.
