Duke Energy acquires 140MW Chilean hydroelectric facilities

The acquisition includes 140MW hydroelectric generating assets – two run-of-river hydroelectric powerplants at Peuchén and Mampil.

Employing the waters of the Duqueco River, the hydroelectric power plants provide electricity for the Central SIC grid at the Charrúa 220 Kv transmission system.

Commenting on the acquisition Duke Energy International president Andrea Bertone termed the hydroelectric units to be a great addition to the company’s existing portfolio in South America.

"We will continue to evaluate additional growth projects in Latin American countries, like Chile, where there is strong growth potential and a stable regulatory system," added Bertone.

The company is hopeful of raising 50% of the acquisition costs by the end of Q1 in 2013 with a consortium of local banks expected to raise the necessary funds.
