Featuring two units each with a capacity of 800MW, the coal-based thermal power project will be built in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu.
Under the Rs.56bn ($822.9m) contract, which was awarded following international competitive bidding process, Bhel will be responsible for the main plant package for the project.
In particular, the firm will be responsible design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection, commissioning and civil works for the main plant package.
Bhel will manufacture the key equipment for the contract at its facilities in Trichy, Haridwar, Bhopal, Ranipet, Hyderabad, Jhansi, Thirumayam and Bangalore.
The company’s Power Sector – Southern Region will be responsible for civil works and erection/ commissioning of the equipment.
Upon commission by September 2019, the plant will generate electricity which is expected to help foster growth in Tamil Nadu.
The deal comes on heels of a main plant package contract awarded to Bhel by TANGEDCO in February 2016 for the 800MW North Chennai supercritical TPP stage III in Tamil Nadu.
In 2014, TANGEDCO selected Bhel to develop a 2x660MW coal-fired supercritical thermal power project at Ennore SEZ in Tamil Nadu, a southern state in India, on engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis.
