EnerSys will manufacture the batteries at its new European submarine battery production facility and expects to ship the first battery in early 2011.
EnerSys, which supplies conventional lead based battery systems for both nuclear and diesel electric submarines, has recently developed submarine batteries with its proprietary thin plate pure lead technology for use in the US Navy’s nuclear submarine fleet.
The company has also developed lithium ion batteries to serve both propulsion and reserve power needs on board submarine fleets in the future.
John Craig, chairman, president and CEO of EnerSys, said: “These five new contracts give further recognition to our long-standing association with navies throughout the world. These new orders totaling $39m are in addition to our existing contract to supply thin plate pure lead submarine batteries to the US Navy.”
