Japanese ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has revealed that the country added 1,178MW of clean energy installations during the nine month period ended 31 December 2012.

The additions included 1,119MW of solar power installations, as well as, 34MW of wind and 22MW of biomass facilities.

The accelerated addition of clean power generating facilities is part of the country’s decreasing reliance on nuclear power following the Fukushima Disaster in 2011, reported Bloomberg.

Japan unveiled a clean energy investment program in July 2012 to incentivize the renewable power sector in the country.

The ministry has since approved 5,236MW of clean power installations by the end of December, which included 3,857MW of non-residential solar power facilities.

The northern island of Hokkaido accounts for 26% of approved applications, for solar plants with 1MW capacity or larger.
