The stationary battery system will be implemented at the Montiba Hydro’s Manitoba HVDC Research Centre facility in Canada.
The repurposed batteries will be used to store electricity generated by renewable energy systems, such as wind and solar power.
The project will receive funding from the Government of Canada’s Clean Energy Fund and Manitoba Hydro and is part of an Electrovaya led $7.6m project.
Electrovaya CEO Sankar Das Gupta said that the project will give insight into the complete re-use of lithium ion batteries.
Manitoba Hydro CEO Bob Brennan said that use of Electrovaya’s refurbished lithium ion batteries is an innovative and potential low cost energy storage solution and that the repurposed lithium ion battery technology has excellent potential for grid storage application.
