Commenting on the expansion strategy, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the government is planning to increase the renewable energy capacity to 55,000MW from 25,000MW.
The sources for renewable energy generation will include non-conventional energy such as solar, wind power and biomass.
The government is aimed at increasing the usage of energy efficiency to lower the energy intensity of the country’s GDP by 20-25%, by 2020.
India has recognized the importance of the growth in the sustainable industry during its 12th Five Year Plan.
The country has launched Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission to develop 22,000MW of solar capacity by the 2022 covering both solar photovoltaic and solar thermal.
