
To be owned and operated by RES Americas, the system uses lithium iron phosphate and comprises a +/-4MW (8MW total range) or 2.6MWh lithium battery, which will provide a service known as frequency regulation to the grid operator PJM.
The project consists of three containers, of which two house batteries weighing around 20 tons each, while the third container converts the direct current (DC) output to alternating current (AC) for the grid.
RES Americas energy storage and technology senior vice president Andy Oliver said the company is looking forward to additional projects that combine affordability, safety, and best-in-class quality.
"Leveraging our renewable energy, transmission and distribution construction experience, we are uniquely placed to excel in energy storage, whether as an IPP, or as an EPC for a utility owner," added Oliver.
In June 2014, the company expects to deliver its second 4MW system to the grid operator IESO in Ontario, Canada.
