Under the frame contract, the consortium will contribute to the first demonstration launched by EDF in France on a megawatt scale for frequency regulation using a lithium-ion battery storage system.

Alstom and Saft will provide the complete 1 MW/30min energy storage and conversion system as part of the contract.

Saft will provide its Intensium Max 20M storage system, while Alstom will deliver its MaxSine eStorage solution.

The storage system and the power converter are planned to be delivered in late 2014.

Alstom’s solution, connected to Saft’s storage system, will be installed on EDF R&D’s experimental Concept Grid for developing grids and smart electrical systems.

Alstom Grid senior vice-president of smart grid & HVDC Patrick Plas said the battery energy storage system is part of the Nouvelle France Industrielle project, which was launched by the French government in 2013.

"At the cutting edge of smart grid and power transportation infrastructure optimization technologies, Alstom Grid is contributing its technological expertise to the excellence of the French and European energy industry," Plas added.

Prior to EDF project, Alstom and Saft have previously collaborated on the smart grid Nice Grid demonstration project in France.

Both the firms installed a 1MW battery energy storage system to address the risk of grid instability if a massive influx of intermittent solar energy occurs.
