The Renewable Energy and Efficient Energy Projects Loan Guarantee Solicitation is aimed at supporting technologies that can be replicated and are market-ready.
The DOE has selected five important technology areas of interest which include advanced grid integration and storage, drop-in biofuels, waste-to-energy, improvement of existing facilities including small hydro and efficiency improvements.
US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said investments in clean, low-carbon energy provide an economic opportunity.
"Through previous loan guarantees and other investments, the Department is already helping launch or jumpstart entire industries in the US, from utility-scale wind and solar to nuclear and lower carbon fossil energy," Moniz added.
"Today’s announcement will help build on and accelerate that success."
Apart from the latest announcement, the DOE’s Loan Programs Office (LPO) is also accepting applications in other areas, which include the $8bn Advanced Fossil Energy Projects solicitation and the $16bn Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing loan program.
The LPO presently supports a portfolio of over $30bn in loans, loan guarantees, and commitments, backing over 30 projects in the country.
