Following an in-depth investigation launched in 2013, the European Union (EU) ruled that the deal for the electricity supply at short notice does not breach state aid rules.
In 2010, Energinet.dk awarded a contract to Dong Energy to supply power to the network at short notice in order to ensure the balance and technical stability of the Danish electricity system. The contract ran from January 2011 until the end of 2015.
European Commission said in a statement: "The Commission further assessed the price paid to DONG Energy and compared it against the price of potential alternative sources and concluded that Energinet.dk secured a competitive price for the required ancillary services in eastern Denmark."
The EU received complaints in 2011 claiming that Dong Energy received state aid through the contract for ancillary services.
However, the commission concluded that the contract conferred no selective advantage on Dong Energy.
It also ruled that Energinet.dk secured a competitive price for the ancillary services in eastern Denmark after assessing the price paid to Dong Energy and compared it against the price of potential alternative sources.
Energinet.dk is the Danish national transmission system operator for electricity and natural gas.
