Spanish renewable energy company Acciona has been selected by HOMT España to design and build two high-tension power lines, totaling 177km, along with several substations in Kenya.
The contract is part of a project worth more than €40m, which is being executed by HOMT España for Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO).
HOMT España operations CEO Stéphane Terranova said: “Kenya is a strategic market for HOMT España, and the company has been operating there for some years.
“We are confident that this agreement with ACCIONA Industrial will enable us to achieve the goals of this project and it is an excellent opportunity to continue contributing to enhance the region's infrastructure."
The first line will include the construction of a 71.6km, 132 kV power line between Rabal and Kilifi along with the construction of a new substation and expansion of another three.
The second line includes the construction of a 106km 132 kV power line between Voi and Taveta along with the construction of a new substation and expansion of an existing substation. The two lines along with substation work need to be executed within a period of 22 months.
The Rabal-Kilifi project is expected to improve power supply to cement plants and tourism complexes in the Mombasa-Kilifi area. KETRACO will be the owner and the user of the new infrastructure.
While, the Voi-Taveta project is being constructed to improve electricity supply for the development of agriculture and tourism industries around the Tsavo East National Park region and to expand power exchanges with Kenya’s neighboring country Tanzania.
Acciona Industrial T&D and Installations head Miguel Ángel Acosta said: “This project will help meet demand for electricity in those regions of Kenya and represents further progress in ACCIONA Industrial's bid to develop sustainable infrastructure."
