The plan was finalized during a meeting between US President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held at the White House.
Obama and Modi welcomed the start of preparatory work for the construction of the six AP 1000 reactors in India, marking a step ahead in finalizing the contractual arrangements by June 2017.
The deal will be the first since the two nations signed civil nuclear accord in 2008.
A joint US-India statement said that the AP 1000 reactors will be built by Westinghouse for the project, which will be financed by India and the US Export-Import Bank.
Under the new atomic-power deal, Nuclear Power Corporation of India and Westinghouse Electric will commence engineering and site-design work for the reactors soon..
TheWhite House said in a statement: "Once completed, the project would be among the largest of its kind."
Additionally, India and the US announced the creation of two innovative new initiatives for Indian solar projects. The initiatives are expected to jointly mobilize up to $1.4bn in climate finance for these projects.
Recently, India signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the US to enhance cooperation on energy security, clean energy and climate change by increasing bilateral engagement and further joint initiatives for promoting sustainable growth.
