Constructed by OTOC Australia, the DeGrussa solar power project integrates off-grid solar and battery storage facility.

Claimed to be Australia’s largest off-the-grid solar power system, the project comprises 34,080 solar PV panels with NEXTracker module system mounted on 4,700 supporting posts as well as a 6MW battery facility.

Backed by funding from Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC), the $40m project is to reduce the mine’s annual diesel consumption by about 5 million liters.

It is also expected to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 12,000t annually.

ARENA CEO Ivor Frischknecht said: "This is a clear example of renewables providing substantial, reliable results for one of Australia’s largest industries.

"Cutting-edge technology is being demonstrated at the site, with advanced lithium-ion batteries storing solar power and sun-tracking solar PV panels maximizing plant output. Smart control systems are linking these components with the existing diesel plant to maximize the amount of renewable energy delivered.

Power generated from the project will be sold to the mine under a six-year power purchase agreement.

Frischknecht added: "Mine owner Sandfire Resources is benefitting from more predictable power costs and is anticipating potential cost savings through reduced reliance on trucked-in diesel.

"We’re helping to share project lessons with the industry to speed up this process and further capitalize on ARENA’s funding support."
