Dubai Municipality has announced plans to build a solid waste into energy plant in Warsan district, with an investment of $544.5m (AED2bn).
The project, which is planned to be developed in phases in Warsan District 2, is a part of Dubai’s effort to reduce landfill waste by 75% over the next five years.
Scheduled to enter service in early 2020, the plant will process the waste through grate furnace to produce electric power while reducing waste disposed in landfills, reported Khaleej Times.
The first phase of the project is designed to process 2,000 metric tons of municipal solid waste per day and produce 60MW of power. It will take up an area of 7.5ha.
The waste to energy plant will be significantly expanded to 15.5ha area during the next development phases.
The Emirates official news agency WAM cited Dubai Municipality deputy-director Essa Al Maidoor as saying that waste to energy facility is the first of the four planned projects to produce green energy.
The three other projects include removing organic waste, generating electricity from landfill in Al Qusais and Jebel Ali, and converting methane gas to power.
Maidoor added that Dubai Municipality, in cooperation with the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, carried out studies to achieve the strategy of Dubai for Clean Energy.
Dubai’s aims to generate 7% of its total power from clean energy sources by 2020.
