Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has said that job opportunities will initially be offered to up to 800 employees who currently work at the site, subject to re-training, with the expectation that the site capacity of 1,000 will be reached within the next two years.

The news comes after Barclaycard, which bought the Goldfish facility from Discover Financial Services for GBP35 million in March 2008, announced proposals to close the Cumbernauld site by the end of 2008.

Antony Jenkins, Barclaycard’s CEO, said: We have said throughout that we were going to do all we could to preserve local jobs. We have been in discussions with SSE, the Scottish government and its agencies, and I am delighted that we have reached this agreement in principle which is subject to final contracts.
