Mike Hunnibell, general manager of transmission services at Transend, said that when the work at the substation has been completed, the company will have improved an area of weakness in its transmission system.
Mr Hunnibell said: The two 220/110kV network transformers that are currently in service at Burnie substation are in poor condition and have a number of design deficiencies that increase their susceptibility to major failure.
The two transformers will be replaced with a single transformer that has more transmission capacity than the two it will replace. The single transformer arrangement will continue to maintain system security in the region as there is sufficient capacity in the 110kV network.
