The station was closed on June 19, 2009 for maintenance. The plant has a power generation capacity of 690 megawatts (MW).
The Oklaunion power plant is located in Oklaunion in Wilbarger County, about 190 miles northwest of Dallas. The plant commenced its operations in 1986. One MW of power generated serves approximately 500 homes in Texas.
The owners of the power station include Brownsville Public Utilities Board with 18%, Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority with 11.7%, AEP Public Service Co of Oklahoma with 15.6%, and AEP Texas North Co with 54.7% ownership interest. AEP Public Service Co of Oklahoma, AEP’s regulated subsidiary, operates the power station on behalf of its owners.
AEP operates approximately 38,000MW of generating capacity, markets energy commodities, and transmits and distributes electricity to around five million customers in 11 states.
