The facility is aimed to reduce the chronic power shortages, particularly in the economic capital of Douala, and increase electric supply to southern Cameroon. The plant is expected t be installed by September 2010 at Logbaba.
Celestin Ndonga, general manager of Cameroon’s Electricity Development Corporation (EDC), said: “We plan to send the power produced from this plant to the southern interconnected network (RIS).”
Ndonga informed that presently the RIS generates only 630MW of power, but the power demand is approximately 1,000MW and is expected to raise by 20% by 2012. Ndonga stated that by 2012 the capacity of the power plant at Logbaba would increase to 355MW.
London-based explorer Victoria Oil & Gas has secured rights of the gas deposit at Logbaba, which holds a proven and probable reserves of 104 billion cubic feet of gas beneath the outskirts of Cameroon’s largest city and main industrial centre, Douala. Victoria is expected to start production at the gas deposit in late 2009 or early 2010.
Ndonga, said: “Once it is being produced, it is expected that energy injected in the RIS will supply six regions of the country: the centre, the south, the coast, the west, the north-west and the south-west.”
