The gas-fired power plant is expected to generate 4,000 gigawatt hours a year. The Lares complex, located in Figueira da Foz, consists of two 431MW units. Work to construct the complex began in 2007, and represented an investment of EUR400m.

Reportedly, the company informed that the first unit at the complex came online in August 2008 and the second unit in early September. The Lares complex combines the use of gas and steam cycle.which is expected to reduce the emissions of carbon monoxide.

The company operates four combined-cycle facilities, which includes Ribatejo and Lares in Portugal as well as Castejon and Soto de Ribera across the border in Spain. These power plants have total power generation capacity of approximately 3,267MW, which accounts for 13% of the utility’s overall installed capacity.
