This is the first step for the cooperative’s proposed power plant to be built on 1,400 acres, with an estimated investment of $4 billion to $6 billion.
As reported, the 1,500MW Cypress Creek power plant is likely to have to go through at least 50 permitting applications before the start of construction.
Coal for the plant would be brought from western Virginia and water from the James River. Construction of the plant is expected to begin in 2012. The plant is expected to be the largest coal-fired power plant in the state of Virginia.
The Surry county Planning Commission will make a recommendation about the plant and the commission is expected to return the recommendation within 90 days. However, final decision about the plant is up to the Town Council.
