The Government of Canada is contributing CAD343m toward the project called “Project Pioneer.” Alberta has inked a letter of intent with TransAlta to capture CO2 at Keephills 3 coal- fired power plant west of Edmonton.
Alberta’s investment, through its CAD2 billion CCS fund, will total CAD431m over the next 15 years. An additional CAD5m will be provided to the project to support front end engineering and design. The CO2 will be used for oil recovery in nearby conventional fields, or stored almost three kilometres underground.
Steve Snyder, President and CEO of TransAlta, said: “This public-private partnership will move us a step closer toward the maturation of CCS technology, vital to the continued development of our energy resources in an environmentally-sustainable way.”
Project Pioneer will be located at the Keephills 3 power plant near Edmonton, Alberta. It is expected that Project Pioneer will reduce CO2 emissions by one million tonnes annually and account for 20% of the Government of Alberta’s reduction target by 2015.
