As reported, the natural gas-fired 600MW plant has been under development for several years. The plant includes advanced emission control equipment and a water conservation system.
A Calpine spokeswoman said that equipment is going through equipment testing as the Otay Mesa power plant ramps up to full operation.
Earlier, Calpine said that the Otay Mesa energy center would supply San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) electricity in connection with a ten-year tolling agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, SDG&E will dispatch power from the Otay Mesa plant to serve its energy customers, and the utility will supply natural gas to fuel the power plant.
Calpine owns, leases, and operates low-carbon, natural gas-fueled, and renewable geothermal power plants. The company currently delivers about 25,000MW of electricity to customers and communities in 16 states in the US and Canada.
