As reported, the utility is building a 4,000MW power plant at Kudgi in Karnataka. The plant, which is scheduled for commissioning in the XIIth Five Year Plan Period (2012-17), will have three units of 800MW capacity in phase I and two units of 800MW in phase II.
NTPC wrote in a letter to the Coal Ministry that it is requested to accord long term coal linkage for the power plant from suitable source. However, the company also stated that it would prefer the dry fuel supplies from South Eastern Coalfields or Mahanadi Coalfields. Both the coalfields are subsidiaries of Coal India, a public sector undertaking of the Indian Government.
With a current generating capacity of 30,644MW, NTPC has embarked on plans to become a 75,000MW company by 2017.
