The periscope will be used installed at the 500 MW prototype fast breeder reactor (PFBR) in Kalpakkam, India.
The instrument has a resolution of 0.2mm line at a spacing of 0.5mm will help in monitoring the internal temperature of liquid sodium in the reactor.
The periscope was developed under the specifications of Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre over a period of two-and-half years.
It is capable of working under the conditions of high temperature and radiation and has facilities for scanning the area of interest, image zooming, image relay, image focusing and image rotation, which are motorised.
The persiscope can be operated remotely operated by an operator with a remote control panel.
