Planned to be built approximately 15-25 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard, the offshore wind farm is exceed to have at least 2,000MW of electricity generation capacity, required to power one million Massachusetts homes.
DONG Energy Wind Power CEO and EVP Samuel Leupold said: “Offshore wind will add to the diversity, and the security, of Massachusetts’ energy mix.”
The utility-scale offshore project, which is scheduled to be commissioned in 2020, will be constructed and operated in a 50:50 partnership between Dong Energy and Eversource Energy.
Eversource Energy president and CEO Jim Judge said: “New England is setting the pace for a national clean energy future with its proven track record in energy efficiency and bold clean energy goals.
“Our partnership with DONG Energy on Bay State Wind represents a significant opportunity to help make those goals a reality and we look forward to delivering this renewable and reliable source of power to customers.”
DONG Energy will leverage its expertise in the offshore wind sector to lead the development and construction of the offshore generation and transmission assets for the project.
Additionally, Eversource will use its transmission expertise in New England to develop and construct the onshore transmission system.
Dong Energy Wind Power US general manager Thomas Brostrøm said: “New England’s water depths and wind speeds are similar to those in Europe and provide attractive conditions.”
In August 2016, Massachusetts issued an energy bill that entails state utilities to purchase 1.6 GW of offshore wind power by 2027.
