The well is located about 8.5 km south of the Avaldsnes discovery well 16/2-6 and its objective was to delineate the southern flank of the Avaldsnes discovery.
The company drilled the well to a total depth of 2,042m MD in a water depth of 111m, using the Bredford Dolphin semi submersible drilling rig.
The 16/5-2S well encountered a 15m Jurassic sequence of which the upper eight metres has excellent reservoir quality.
The company said good hydrocarbon shows were observed below the oil water contact but were evaluated as not producible hydrocarbons.
The well is the first of an extensive Avaldsnes appraisal program comprising at least four wells in the PL501 during this year.
Lundin Norway operates the PL501 with a 40% interest and its partners are Statoil Petroleum (40%) and Maersk Oil Norway (20%).
