The Tapir South prospect is about 80km off Namibia in northern Block 1811A, in which Chariot has a 100% equity interest.
Semi-submersible drilling rig Maersk Deliverer was used to spud the 1811/5-1 well on the South Tapir prospect.
Chariot said the prospect has a 25% chance of success with unrisked prospective resource potential of 604 million barrels of oil.
Drilling and testing is expected to take 70 days with a total estimated total vertical depth subsea of 5,100m.
The Tapir South prospect is part of the Tapir trend where three prospects have been identified on a large ridge, Chariot said.
Chariot said the second well in the exploration program, Kabeljou, also known as 2714/6-1 is expected to be drilled earlier than previously reported.
A drilling unit is expected to be secured in the third quarter.
