Under the contract, Aecon will build the concrete foundation, pipe rack foundation and prepare the site for the process plant.
The scope of the work also includes detailed excavation and backfill for the structures.
Aecon chief operating officer Teri McKibbon said the company will brings its heavy civil expertise to this sustainable mining project for Vale.
"We are pleased to have a part in this environmentally innovative project for the Greater Sudbury area," McKibbon added.
The Vale Clean AER project on the whole will completely retrofit the comapany’s smelter converter aisle, construct new secondary baghouse and wet gas cleaning plant, build a second acid plant, and a new material handling facilities to reduce the entry of dust in the community.
The smelter will operate even during the project work is in progress and once the project is complete will witness 70% reduction in the emission of sulphur dioxide, metals emission by 35% to 40%, and dust levels.
The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015.
