The move is in line with the partnership’s grid modernization efforts.
Digital substation equipment, which is to be developed, will employ Cisco’s substation-grade Connected GridT routers and switches with communications and cyber-security functions.
The joint solution will also be equipped with Alstom designed DS AgileT control system for substation automation and will enable energy and information transfer hubs within modern grid architectures.
Commenting on the deal, Alstom Grid Power and Automation senior vice-president Patrick Plas said, "This partnership between Alstom and Cisco brings our digital substation offering to yet another level of performance and reliability for our customers."
Cisco Connected Energy Networks vice-president and general manager Lionel Chocron said, "Cisco’s collaboration with Alstom brings together two sets of complementary technologies that will allow our joint customers to secure their operations, achieve cost savings and extract greater value from existing technology infrastructure."
Smart grid-enabled digital substations are expected to offer enhanced security for electric utilities and substation operators.
Recommendations by National Institute of Standards and Technology and IEC International Electrotechnical Commission will be incorporated by the new digital substation architecture during the co-development.
