The blast happened around 11am at a coal mine in Xiaohe Township of Weiyuan County on 5 January 2014, reported Xinhua.
The incident occurred when eight miners were conducting a routine safety check, according to the county’s information office.
One of five miners rescued died in a local hospital around noon while three others who were trapped were found at 7:20pm but died in hospital later.
Currently, investigation into the gas burning cause is underway.
Weiyuan is located 200km from the provincial capital of Chengdu.
