A ‘small number’ of coastal nuclear power plants will be allowed before 2015, a statement from China’s State Council noted.
The administrative authority said that all new nuclear station will be built according to ‘third-generation safety standards,’ which apply to the most recent generation of nuclear reactors.
The ban on approvals of inland power plants is expected to halt the construction of three proposed projects in central China – the Pengze plant, the Dafan plant, and the Taohuajiang plant, reported The Economic Times citing local media.
China has 15 commercial nuclear reactors in operational and 27 reactors being constructed near coastal areas, according to the World Nuclear Association.
