According to the company, within months the processing capacity will be increased to boost its generation of cash flow.
BP was quoted by Reuters as saying that the refinery, which is currently processing 350,000 barrels per day (bpd), would ramp up processing of heavy crudes to 280,000bpd in the next few months from the current 160,000bpd.
On 24 February 2014, BP has started the modernisation of a 65,000-bpd gasoline-producing fluidic catalytic cracking unit (FCCU) at the Whiting refinery, according to the publication.
The company will run the 110,000bpd 500 unit at the refinery, while the unit 600 has been shut down in preparation for the work.
