The two concessions, the North block and the South block covering a total of about 14,500km2 were earlier operated by Kazakh Company Nurmunai Petrogas.

Total Upstream president Yves-Louis Darricarrère said, "The acquisition of the stake in the Nurmunai Petrogas Concessions is in line with Total ambitious exploration strategy and strengthens the presence of the Group in Kazakhstan, where it will deploy its expertise as operator in a region with promising potential."

With 75% acquisition of the blocks, Total, the new operator of the licenses will acquire the seismic data and drill a well in 2013.

The acquisition was approved by the government authorities and has increased the company’s upstream portfolio beyond Caspian Sea assets.
