As per terms of the deal, Alstom will supply two specially designed generators with an output capacity of 180MW each and also undertake the assembling and commissioning of machines.
The machines, which are expected to be operational from 2018, will allow Obervermuntwerk II pumped-storage power stations to have an output of 360MW making it Illwerke’s second-largest power station.
Alstom Renewable Austria managing director Josef Reisel said given the expansion of intermittent energy production sources which increases the need for storage, pumped storage will play a greater role in tomorrow’s energy market.
"It is the most efficient and flexible form of storing electricity on a grid scale, enabling utilities to respond quickly to demand and balance the grid, replacing the fossil fuels traditionally used during peak demand periods with renewable CO2 free energy," Reisel added.
Obervermuntwerk II power plant is designed parallel to the current Obervermuntwerk power facility and will be constructed at a height of 1,700m above sea level.
